SEDATION: PROVIDING A MORE COMFORTABLE VISIT

Having General Anesthesia / Intravenous Sedation for Dental Procedures:

It is common for many patients to feel nervous or anxious about their dental procedures.  Our doctors have advanced training in the use of medications to make you feel more comfortable.  By having a more relaxed patient, we are able to complete more of your dentistry in one appointment.  By relieving stress, we also provide a safer experience for patients with a delicate medical condition.

How is the medication administered?

The sedative and anesthetic medications are typically given intravenously (IV).  Since the effects are so rapid by this means of administration, your doctor can precisely give the correct dosage.  Also, if more medications are needed during the procedure, the IV allows easy administration.  Oral medications and nitrous oxide may be used in conjunction with the IV to achieve the desired effect.

How am I monitored during the procedure?

Depending on the depth of the sedation and anesthetic being used, as well as your own medical condition, various monitors will be used.  An automatic blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter for oxygen levels, and an EKG as used in hospitals insures your safety.
The doctor along with his anesthesia team will be closely observing you throughout the procedure. In Ohio, a special permit is required to administer sedative medications.
In order to qualify, our doctors have provided evidence of advanced training in anesthesia, and our facility has passed inspection by the State of Ohio.

What role do I play?

Taking an active part in your health care is important in helping you achieve the healthiest mouth possible.  This includes knowing about your health and talking to your dentist about treatment decisions and options.
In particular, let your dentist know:
if you have any illnesses or medical conditions;
what medications you are taking (both prescription and over-the-counter);
if you've had any problems with medications;
if you have any drug allergies or dependencies;
if you are pregnant;
if you have had recent surgery.
Arrange to have an adult accompany you to the office and attend to you the rest of the day.  Working together we can make your dental visit a pleasant experience.
